How business incubators help startups
Investments, development, cases from Poland
It is difficult for startups to survive on their own. Even the strongest idea may not reach the market without support. Business incubators help startup teams avoid mistakes, get investments, develop their product and scale their business. This is not theory - incubators work in practice. In this article - concrete examples, figures and advice.

Support at the start: why a startup needs an incubator from day one
Where to start a startup and how an incubator helps
At the early stage, a startup faces dozens of questions: how to test an idea, how to understand the needs of the target audience, how to assemble a team, what legal steps need to be taken, how to do accounting, and how to protect intellectual property. These tasks are important already at the pre-seed stage, when the team is just forming a hypothesis and the first prototype.
Incubators help you get through this stage faster and with less risk. They offer:
- Pre-seed programsIn the framework of which the startup receives basic knowledge on Customer Development, MVP-design, financial modeling and legal issues.
- Mentorswho hold weekly meetings, track progress and help focus.
- Legal and administrative supportincluding assistance with company registration, intellectual property documentation, drafting NDAs and contracts with contractors.
- Early networking: access to potential first customers, early adopters, business partners.
A typical mistake of beginners is to spend 6-9 months building a product without talking to a single potential customer. Incubators provide a clear process for validating hypotheses: interview, problem-solution fit, smoke test or landing with an early waiting list.
Infermedica (Wrocław) started as an idea of three engineers and a doctor. By participating in Google for Startups Warsaw, the startup gained access to mentoring support, technical advisors and its first customers in the medical sector.

Comparison: startup with incubator vs without
Attracting investment: from first investments to venture capital
How incubators are prepared for meetings with investors
Attracting investment is not only about finding money, but also about presenting yourself properly. Incubators teach this through:
- Developing a pitch deck: structure, visualization, unit economics, TAM/SAM/SOM, competitor analysis, team, traction, funding plan.
- Dry pitch sessions - "dry runs" in front of mentors and other funders with a breakdown of mistakes.
- Pitch days and demo daysventure capitalists, business angels, funds and corporations are invited to these events. Such events give startups real practice and a chance to get an intro to a fund or a pilot contract with a B2B client.
- Investor networkingwhere a startup can meet investors without a formal presentation.
Access to grants and venture capital
Incubators also help structure grant applications:
- EU funding: EIC Accelerator, Horizon Europe, EIT Health/Digital/Manufacturing.
- Polish grants: PARP, NCBiR, Fundusz Startup PL.
- Projects under the Smart Growth Operational Program (PO IR).
The incubator usually provides templates, consultants, assistance in writing a budget and business plan, and help in preparing for the defense of the project.
Example: Vue Storefront received investment after a demo day at Google for Startups, followed by a round from Movens Capital and SMOK Ventures. Today it is a headless eCommerce platform with global scale.
Product and technology development in an incubator environment
Assistance in MVP development and scaling
Creating an MVP isn't just about writing code. It is:
- Building a CJM (Customer Journey Map)
- Primary prototype creation (Figma, no-code, click-dummy)
- Receiving feedback and iteration
Incubators give access to:
- UX/UI expertswhich help to form a logical and understandable interface structure
- Dev partners or freelancerswho can be hired at a discounted rate.
- No-code platforms for quick start (e.g. Bubble, Glide, Webflow)
After launching an MVP, a startup can get support in:
- Collecting analytics (Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Hotjar)
- Setting up A/B tests
- Selection of KPIs and OKRs for the next stage of development
Access to laboratories, equipment and IT resources
For startups in biotech, hardware, robotics, AI, access to infrastructure is critical. Incubators at universities and technoparks provide:
- Biolabs with R&D capabilities
- Equipment for 3D printing, electronics, testing of IoT devices
- Server capacity, cloud credits (GCP, AWS, Azure)
- Specialists for technology validation (e.g. professors, engineers, data scientists)
Use of innovative techniques and sprints
Teams learn how to work through techniques:
- Lean Startup: build-measure-learn, validated learning, value hypothesis.
- Design Sprint (using the Google Ventures model): from problem to prototype in 5 days.
- Agile, Scrum, Kanban - with hands-on boards and task tracking.
Biotts (Wrocław) developed a delivery system for pharmaceuticals using the incubator's laboratory facilities and support from experts. This made it possible to pass certification and enter clinical trials 1.5 times faster.
All about Polish business incubators: who helps startups, how to get in and what they give in 2025.
Mentorship, community and soft skills
Mentor experience and its impact
Incubator mentors are:
- Serial funders who have already sold to companies
- Marketers with experience in large agencies
- Specialists in growth hacking and SEO
- Lawyers and CFOs
They help not in the abstract, but in business: to check the marketing strategy, to find vulnerabilities in the business model, to form KPIs.
Community: startups learn from each other
Peer-to-peer learning is an important part. Incubators create Slack groups, hold retro sessions and masterminds where teams share successes and failures.
This reduces feelings of isolation and helps you find solutions faster.
Development of leadership and management skills
Soft skills are often underestimated. Incubators teach this through:
- Public speaking and presentation trainings
- Simulations of interviews and pitches
- Coaching on team management, motivation and delegation

Who helps the startup inside the incubator
International programs and access to the global market
European level programs and participation in exhibitions
Incubators are actively collaborating with:
- Horizon Europe (science and technology grants)
- EIT Digital/Health/RawMaterials
- Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs
- Techstars, MassChallenge, Startupbootcamp (often via referral)
They also cover participation in exhibitions (Web Summit, Slush, VivaTech), which provides access to investors and partners outside of Poland.
Partnerships with global corporations and accelerators
Incubators develop links with:
- Google (via Google for Startups)
- Microsoft (via Founders Hub)
- Orange Fab, Santander X, Amazon Activate
This gives:
- Technical resources (servers, API, credits)
- Opportunity for pilot projects and first clients
- Intro to corporate accelerators
Example: Talent Alpha used the incubator's connections to enter the British market and sign a contract with a major consulting agency.
Case Studies: Successful Startups from Polish Incubators
Vue Storefront is a headless e-commerce framework that enables companies to build fast, scalable, and platform-agnostic stores. The startup received pre-seed support from Google for Startups Warsaw and the Polish Development Fund (PFR) accelerator. Participating in the incubator program gave the team access to technical mentorship and Google cloud resources, enabling them to quickly deploy a prototype based on Vue.js and GraphQL. The startup subsequently received several rounds of investment from Movens Capital, SMOK Ventures, and others. Today, Vue Storefront is used in over 20 countries and has partner integrations with Magento, Shopify, and SAP Commerce.
Infermedica is an AI-powered platform for preliminary diagnostics and medical triage. Initially, the team worked on an MVP based on a symptom database and differential diagnostic algorithms. Participation in Google for Startups in Warsaw provided the opportunity to connect with technical experts, conduct usability testing in clinics, and attract the first pilot clients. As part of the incubator program, the startup received grants from NCBiR and investment from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Infermedica currently serves over 10 million users in 30+ countries, including partners with Allianz, Microsoft, and PZU.
Skriware develops educational solutions in the STEM field, from 3D printers to robotics learning platforms. The team completed an incubator program at the Warsaw University of Technology, where they gained access to engineering labs and faculty. The startup created a comprehensive ecosystem, SkriLab, for schools, including printers, construction kits, and educational scenarios. Participation in the international Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs program allowed the team to launch pilot projects in the Czech Republic and Finland. Today, Skriware works with educational institutions across Europe and the United States.
Conclusion: Is it worth going to an incubator?
If you're building a startup and want to speed up your path to market, an incubator can provide everything you need: structure, contacts, expertise, and resources. This is especially helpful at the pre-seed and seed stages. But it's important to be prepared: no incubator will build a business for you.
